Trip to Danville, Ill

Posted by on Sunday, November 26, 2006 (PST)

This is a brief summary of my recent trip to Danville, Illinois in search of information about Great-Great Grandparents John Doan and Sarah Jane(Shields).

Information about the lives of these two important ancestors continues to be elusive!  I really don't know much more about John and Sarah, except I was able to drive up and down the street where they once lived in Danville.

On Tuesday, 21 Nov, I drove with my friend, David Kemp, from Decatur to Danville in hopes of finding more information about John and Sarah.  We quickly located the Illiana Genealogical & Historical Society at :

         215 West North Street

         Danville, Illinois 61832-5749

         217-431-8733

         email:  ighs@sbcglobal.net

         website:  http://www.illianaghs.org

         research email:  ighs-research@sbcglobal.net

We searched the Quaker Monthly Meeting records for the area, but were not able to find any references to John and Sarah.  But we did confirm the 1880 census report of this family living on Walnut Street(one block east from this building).

Here is a link to the census report on this site:

This is what we know about John and Sarah.  They appear on the 1870 Census in Clinton County, Ohio, living on a farm http://www.werrelated.com/Genealogy/Census_Images/8684.aspx.  I have not been able to locate the farm yet.  That will wait for the next trip to Wilmington, Ohio.  They moved to Illinois sometime between 1870 and 1880.  Sometime after 1880 they moved to Cook County, Chicago, Ill.  We have located death certificates for both John and Sarah in Cook County.  There remains no 1890 Census data, so we have no furthur census information about the pair, because John Doan died on April 21, 1895.  Sarah died on March 20, 1924, so we should be able to find more census records for her.  Here is one possible candidate that I have not confirmed:  Item 84 at http://www.werrelated.com/Genealogy/Census_Images/8683.aspx

Just for clarification, this is an entry from the Cook County Monthly Meeting Records Database:

Spouse's Death Date: 15 Mar 1924
